Aftercare & Relapse Prevention

What is Aftercare & Relapse Prevention?

“Aftercare” and ‘Relapse Prevention’ are general terms used to describe any ongoing or follow-up treatment for substance abuse that occurs after an initial rehab program. No matter the setting, treatment provider, or methods used, the goals of addiction aftercare programs are the same and include:

  • To maintain recovery from substance abuse.
  • To find ways to prevent relapse.
  • To achieve a life filled with rewarding relationships and a sense of purpose.

One reason that continuing treatment is essential in all situations is because longstanding substance abuse can, in some cases, alter the normal functioning of the brain. Some of these changes do not instantly reverse once use ends. In fact, they can last long after substance use has terminated.

The physical impact of addiction is often accompanied by several psychological changes affecting thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may persist even after the substance is removed from the body. The physiological changes associated with addiction and their potential lasting impacting to both mental and physical health serve to reaffirm the need for long-term treatment.

Relapse describes the process where a former drug addict, alcoholic or gambler chooses to revert back to his or her previous addictive behaviour. The process of relapse is complicated and often is triggered by an assortment of complex emotional and psychological triggers. In fact the psychological act of relapse precedes the physical act of relapse often by two or three days. Relapse begins as an unconscious act on behalf of the recovered addict and one which is difficult to avoid in the absence of learned coping strategies, a relapse prevention plan or with ongoing professional support.

When relapse is likely to occur a number of changes in the recovered addict’s behaviour will take place. The first step towards relapse has been termed emotional relapse.

Early signs of Relapse

Signs of emotional relapse include:

  • Detrimental changes in eating habits
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Exhaustion
  • Emotional isolation

Our patients are taught during residential rehabilitation how to look out for the above signs. This allows our patients to take early action and so prevent relapse from developing.

Relapse Progression

If emotional relapse is not dealt with appropriately a process known as mental relapse will take place. During mental relapse the recovered addict becomes ever more conscious of his or her desire to continue with an addictive behaviour. Often the individual will reason the addiction will be more manageable ‘this time around’. If advice is not sought swiftly the consequences could be life-threatening as the addiction returns and old levels of tolerance are no longer present.

Our Aftercare & Relapse Prevention Plan

At Ayurva we take considerable pride when it comes to our relapse prevention programme. Our clients relapse rate is much lower than rehabilitation industry averages and our successful completion in treatment is much higher than that national average.

Once our clients leave either our Lancashire or Bulgarian residential rehabilitation clinics an after-care support team will be put in place. This support team acts as the first point of contact should relapse occur.  Relapse prevention supplements what is learned during residential rehabilitation and both aim to ensure recovery is as uninterrupted as possible.

The relapse prevention plan, including 'Circled of Support' you receive will be fully tailored to your needs. This plan will be set within plenty of time prior to leaving our rehabilitation clinic. You are able to read about our after-care programme here which details relevant facts accounted for in an after-care and relapse prevention plan.
